BREVARD COUNTY — It takes courage to leave an abuser, to say “enough is enough” and to get the help needed to move on.
The Zonta Club of Melbourne has partnered once again with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office for its annual “Will Run For Chocolate, Won’t Stand For Violence” 5K run and walk.
The 5K is scheduled to take place at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Space Coast Field of Dreams, 3053 Fell Road, West Melbourne.
The Zonta Club of Melbourne aims to improve the lives of women, and has throughout the years raised awareness about domestic violence and human trafficking, as well as supported local women’s shelters.
“This money goes specifically to the project that we partner with Brevard County Sheriff’s Department, and this money helps raise awareness and pay for a strangulation education program,” said Doris Larson, past co-president of the Zonta Club of Melbourne.
“Strangulation is one of the ways women are abused and intimidated,” Ms. Larson continued. “One in four women will be a victim of domestic violence in their lifetime.”
Some of the funds will also be used to support the domestic violence programs the Zonta Club of Melbourne currently works with, and will go toward its scholarships for young women in Brevard.
The top three winners of the Zonta Club of Melbourne’s 2018 Chocolate Festival have been invited to share their winning chocolate concoction (or a chocolate dish) during the 5K race.
Participants are encouraged to wear orange, which is representative of “National Domestic Violence Awareness Month” in October. The participant with the brightest or most outrageous orange costume will win a special award.
Awards will be handed out after the race for multiple categories. Registration before Oct. 4 costs $15 for children and $25 for adults, and will increase to $30 for adults afterward.
