BREVARD COUNTY — Often the best first impression comes from a brilliant smile, and having the right dentist can make all the difference.

Dr. Rick Waggener offers a father and son practice in Merritt Island, and has been serving patient’s needs in the area since the mid-1980’s.

“We’re a general practice, so we offer family, cosmetic, crowns, root canals and extractions,” said Dr. Cole Waggener. “We focus on the patient and we want them to feel comfortable with what we’re doing.”

Inside Dr. Waggener’s practice, patients are transported to the Smokey Mountains, which aids in giving an open and calm environment.

The reception area includes a “No Cavity Club” wall area to promote children’s tooth brushing habits, farming tools on the walls, miniature pine trees and magazines while you wait. Although, Dr. Waggener added, patients don’t have a long wait time.

Dr. Cole Waggener joined his father, Dr. Rick, after finishing dental school at the University of Michigan. However, the dentist’s office is more than familiar with Dr. Cole as he’s spent years as a teenager assisting his father.

“We try to keep up with research that’s out, and I’m still newly out of school so I can practice a lot of what’s being taught,” Dr. Waggener said. “It was nice to see when I came in that my dad has been continuing to keep up with technology.”

Technology such as the Cerec Dental Crown machine can mean patients no longer have to wait to get a crown. The 3-D technology can shape and create a crown that can be placed in the same day.

Another important aspect of the profession, according to Dr. Cole Waggener, is helping patients in need. Dr. Cole said he has been going on mission trips with his father, and, coincidentally, is how he met his wife, who also is a dentist.

The couple has a young daughter and are expecting another child this fall.

Dental patients can sometimes feel nervous about their visit, but the Drs. Waggener has had the experience to soothe any patient who sits in their chairs.

Patients can receive laughing gas if anxious, and can bring headphones and music if they need it for their visit.

“We talk with patients about what’s going on, and the pros and cons of what we can do,” Dr. Cole Waggener said. “We want them to make the decision what their treatment will be so that they can look back in a few years and say they made a good choice with the information we gave them.”

Dr. Waggener’s practice also offers early dental care, endodontics, periodontics, snoring therapy and a Temporomandibular Joint exam.

In the coming years, Dr. Cole Waggener said he hopes to keep up with the high standard of patient care his father has provided and to stay up to date with technology.

Dr. Waggener’s office open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The office closes for lunch between 1-2 p.m. It is located at 115 Parnell St., Merritt Island.
