COCOA BEACH – This weekend, Surfside Playhouse will close its 2018-19 season with a family-friendly, comic adaptation of the legendary tale of Robin Hood.
“Robin Hood Fractured,” the third yearly work in the theater’s “Fractured” series – following “Alice in Wonderland Fractured” and “Wizard of Oz Fractured” – will open Friday, June 14 at 8 p.m. and will run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through June 23.
Written by Surfside Playhouse Artistic Director Bryan Bergeron, who has completed more than 50 original plays and adaptations, the play will present all the familiar Robin Hood characters and scenes – but with a farcical twist – along with songs with lyrics also written by Bergeron.
“I love taking a familiar story and reshaping it into a comedy,” Mr. Bergeron said of the play, which was inspired by “Fractured Fairy Tales,” a segment of the 1959-1964 Rocky and Bullwinkle TV series.
“Robin Hood Fractured features, what we call ‘Layered Comedy,’” Mr. Bergeron added. “It is family entertainment suitable for children with a comedic layer aimed directly at the adults.”
Theatrical works such as this are one of the things that make Surfside unique in the county, Mr. Bergeron noted.
“Surfside Playhouse presents published and unpublished theatrical entertainment produced with a certain ‘down home’ flair rarely seen in community theater,” Mr. Bergeron said. “Our beachside venue also present concerts, specialty entertainment, films, youth theatre and playwriting competitions.”
Friday and Saturday performances of “Robin Hood Fractured” are set for 8 p.m. Sunday matinees will run at 2 p.m.
Adult admission to all shows is $25; the senior, military and student rate is $22; and tickets for children 17 and under are $10. Tickets can be purchased at www.SurfsidePlayhouse.org.
The playhouse is located at 301 Ramp Road in Cocoa Beach.
