Senior Fun Expo

This year's Senior Fun Expo will feature a pampered pet costume contest, as well as a host of vendors representing a variety of senior resources from fun to health related topics.

BREVARD COUNTY — Keeping healthy doesn’t have to be a chore, especially when there are free expos around the corner with resources to help residents stay on top of their wellness.

Returning next weekend is Fairwinds Markets and Expos “Senior Fun Expo,” a free event aimed at educating the public while shedding light on local resources and nonprofits.

Seniors will be greeted with demos, raffles, a pampered pet costume contest and entertainment from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16 at the Viera Regional Community Center, 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way.

“What I love about this is there’s some philanthropy involved, there’s community activism and there’s people getting to meet new businesses,” said Lisa Hamel, founder of Fairwinds Markets and Expos. “It really is all local. I’m trying to be more of a community resource.”

Seniors unsure about the Medicare and Medicaid world of insurance can learn about what they’re eligible for. The Early Detection Foundation, which is one of the vendors at this expo, offers free genetic testing to seniors with Medicare, according to Ms. Hamel.

Giant Recreation World, a title sponsor for this event, will have rigs available for viewing. It will also offer one of the rigs for a 3-day motor home trip as one of the event’s raffle prizes.

Total Wine & More has offered a private wine class for 20 people as another raffle prize.

“Having done advertising for so many years, this is a different way for people to do the eye-to-eye, where they get to see the person that they’re going to be doing business with,” Ms. Hamel said. “It’s not just coming and taking stuff off the table, which I hear a lot about.”

The Senior Fun Expo will shed some light on local nonprofit I Am A Freedom Fighter, which aims to educate and empower the community to abolish human trafficking.

A 50/50 raffle will benefit I Am A Freedom Fighter, and the winner will walk away with half of the amount raised.

Participants do not need to be present to win either of the three raffles.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Department will host a K-9 demonstration from 11 a.m. to noon. Viera Petworks is a sponsor of the pampered pet costume contest, during which pets must be registered by 1 p.m. and judging will take place from 1:30-2 p.m.

Food trucks, Wolfgang Academy of Music, Harbor City Harmonizers, Bikers Against Child Abuse, Aging Matters and Fairvilla Boutique will be in attendance.
