BREVARD COUNTY — Residents, it's time to get creative! Surfside Playhouse is seeking entries as part of its “10 Minute Play Contest” and “PSA Competition” with winners announced weekly. Participation is open to the public.

“It’s one of several initiatives to keep our community involved,” said Bryan Bergeron, artistic director for Surfside Playhouse. “Projects like these are open to actors, writers, patrons, volunteers and the general public. We are Surfsiders. We want to be together to participate in theatre and Creating Creative Content (Triple Cs). This opens the door for theatre goers to become theatre participants.”

The rules for both contests are simple, and can be found by searching “Surfside Playhouse 10 Minute Play Contest” and “Surfside Playhouse PSA Competition” on Facebook.

In regard to the 10 Minute Play Contest, participants must write a play 7-10 minutes long, with no more than four characters, Facebook appropriate (PG-13) and attached to a Facebook post as a PDF.

Winners will be announced on the Surfside Playhouse Facebook page every Wednesday at 7 p.m. with the winning play read aloud by Brevard County actors.

The PSA Competition is also open to the public’s creativity, and must be submitted as a 30 to 60 second video using any kind of camera. The content must be appropriate for all ages, and if children under the age of 15 participate, a parent must appear in the same video. Additionally, the following statement should be included at the top of each video, “The following public service announcement is brought to you by Surfside Playhouse... Where Cocoa Beach meets the stage.”

Winners for the PSA Competition are announced every Monday at 7 p.m.

“These scripts are posted for all to see,” Mr. Bergeron said. “There are many wonderful comments being posted about all our entries. With the future of live theatre in question for the time being, original online content is a path to fiscal success.”

While members of Surfside Playhouse eagerly await to re-open with the postponed production “The Pirates of Penzance,” the theater depends on donations to maintain the facility.
