The Cottage Irish Pub has brought back its Traditional Irish Music Seisiuns outdoors from 5-7 p.m. on Saturdays.

BREVARD COUNTY — There’s nothing like welcoming back old friends and celebrating togetherness like a traditional Irish Music Seisiún.

Now that The Cottage Irish Pub has opened its doors to the public again, it has also resumed its gathering of local musicians who share stories, tunes and poetry.

The Traditional Irish Music Seisiúns take place every Saturday from 5-7 p.m. at The Cottage Irish Pub, 1385 Highland Ave., Melbourne.

“It’s nice to be able to get into a safe environment that we can see one another again and play together as musicians,” said Ann Dillon, coordinator of The Cottage seisiúns.

A few of the musicians have been finding ways to connect online and meeting in Vero Beach once lockdown restrictions eased in order to play their instruments together.

People enjoying a stroll through the park in Vero Beach got a wonderful surprise as only a handful of musicians played in the gazebo. Spectators would stop and clap along to the music, or even dance, Mrs. Dillon said.

During the time in isolation, musicians have been learning new tunes, sets and songs. Patrons of The Cottage Irish Pub will get the chance to enjoy the lively atmosphere as the traditional seisiúns keeps the spirit of Irish music alive.

The public is ready to be back and among friends once more, Mrs. Dillon said, as she has been getting text messages asking when and where the next music get-togethers are occurring.

Mrs. Dillon, who plays the concertina, accordion and whistle, said what she enjoys most from playing in these seisiúns is how it brings people together. Patrons can discover others who are from their same part of the world, share their stories and feel a part of something.

“It’s not always just about the music, it’s about the gathering,” Mrs. Dillon said. “In an Irish setting like that, it was all about the atmosphere people would create – a real nice, friendly, happy, go-lucky atmosphere. Even people who come by themselves, they’d always find these other people there and would become part of that group for the night. It’s always a place where people feel like they’re coming home.”

The next Traditional Irish Music Seisiún is scheduled for June 20.
