Eastern Florida State College, a sub-grantee of the Social Innovation Fund program under a grant provided from the Corporation for National and Community Service to AARP Foundation, the charitable affiliate of AARP, is partnering once again with CareerSource Brevard, welcoming more participants to trainings for women 50-plus that teach new job skills and can help them find jobs.

The BACK TO WORK 50+ Women’s Economic Stability Initiative will hold a Smart Strategies Workshop on Wednesday, July 12 from 9-11 a.m. on the EFSC Melbourne campus in the Building 4 auditorium. The Melbourne Campus is located at 3865 N. Wickham Road.

More than $30 million settlement reached with Johnson & Johnson

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and 42 other attorneys general have announced a multimillion-dollar settlement with Johnson & Johnson and Johnson & Johnson Consumer, Inc. resolving allegations that the company unlawfully promoted over-the-counter drugs.

According to the complaint filed simultaneously with the states’ consent judgment, the defendants misled consumers into believing they were purchasing drugs manufactured in an FDA-compliant facility. As part of the settlement, Florida will receive more than $1.6 million.

The consent judgment requires McNeil-PPC, Inc., a division of Johnson & Johnson Consumer, Inc., that manufactures and distributes OTC drugs, to ensure that its marketing and promotional practices do not unlawfully promote OTC drug products. According to the multi-state investigation, the defendants acted through McNeil to promote OTC drugs as compliant with federally mandated current Good Manufacturing Practices. The Food and Drug Administration, however, found that, between 2009 and 2011, some McNeil manufacturing facilities did not comply with the mandated practices. McNeil has changed from a wholly-owned subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson to a division of Johnson & Johnson Consumer, Inc.

As part of the settlement, the defendants are required to conform to the following terms:

- Provide information to participating attorneys general within 60 days of a written request regarding the identity of wholesalers or warehouses where any recalled OTC drugs were distributed in their state;

- Ensure not to represent on its websites that McNeil’s OTC Drug Product facilities meet cGMP as outlined by the FDA if McNeil has had a Class I or Class II Recall of OTC drug products within the prior 12 months; and

- Follow internal standard operating polices regarding whether to open a Corrective Action and Preventive Action plan during the manufacture of an OTC drug.

This settlement is pending judicial approval.

Boeing Employees Community Fund presents $5,000 donation

Brevard County Legal Aid recruits, trains and manages more than 150 volunteer attorneys in Brevard County who provide quality legal services to economically disadvantaged residents of Brevard County, including many children in foster care who are part of BCLA’s Children’s Legal Advocacy Project. Through CLAP, BCLA attorneys provide critical legal representation to children as they transition from foster care to independent living.

The free legal assistance that BCLA provides to Brevard County children in foster care is critically important for their chance of success as they age out of the system. BCLA attorneys help them obtain safe and affordable housing, tuition fee waivers, healthcare coverage and treatment, basic financial planning skills and more. Additional efforts assist children with acquiring employment and becoming productive members of the Brevard County community.

The Boeing Employees Community Fund supports Brevard County Legal Aid in its efforts to advocate for children in need through the Children’s Legal Advocacy Project.

Space Coast Association of Realtors visit Washington and Capitol Hill

On behalf of current and future home and property owners throughout the country, more than 9,600 Realtors traveled to Washington, D.C., in late May to advance key real estate issues during the 2017 Realtor Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo.

Lynn Jones, 2017 president of the Space Coast Association of Realtors, joined fellow realtors from Florida and across the nation to attend meetings and informational sessions, as well as meet with regulatory agency staff and lawmakers on Capitol Hill to discuss and advocate real estate issues affecting their businesses, communities and clients.

Council members appointed to serve on Florida League of Cities

The Florida League of Cities has appointed Cocoa District 2 Councilperson Brenda Warner and City Manager John A. Titkanich, Jr., AICP, ICMA-CM, to serve on the 2017-18 Land Use & Economic Development Legislative Policy Committee and District 4 Councilperson Jeri Blanco to serve on the 2017-18 Energy, Environment & Natural Resources Legislative Policy Committee.

Councilperson Warner has been committed to building a solid foundation for Cocoa’s future for almost two decades when she was first elected to the Cocoa City Council in 1999. She has chaired the Titusville Chamber Government Affairs Committee and been a member of the Cocoa Police Advisory Board, Cocoa Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the Downtown Redevelopment Agency. She currently serves on the Brevard County Affordable Housing Council, the County Affordable Housing Task Force, the Cocoa U.S. 1 Corridor Redevelopment Agency and the Cocoa Police Athletic League Board of Directors.

Councilperson Blanco was appointed to City Council in 2016. She has served on the U.S. 1 CRA for the city for approximately 10 years, as well as on the Brevard County CDBG Board since 2014. As a local Realtor she has also served on several committees for the Board of Realtors. She currently serves on the MLS Committee, the Brevard Children in Need Committee and the Government Affairs Committee.

City Manager John A. Titkanich, Jr., AICP, ICMA-CM, has been with the city of Cocoa for more than a decade now. Prior to being appointed city manager in February 2013, he served as the city’s Community Development Director for more than eight years. He previously served as a planner in both Land Development and Economic Development for the city of Orlando. He created the Office of Economic Development for the city of Cocoa in 2002 and is a member of the International City/County Management Association where he is recognized as a Credentialed Manager (ICMA-CM).

Product featured on concept vehicle

Always exploring new applications for its innovative EVA non-skid products, SeaDek is going to be a supplier for NASA's recently unveiled Mars Rover concept vehicle.

Designed and built by Parker Brothers Concepts - best known for its futuristic concept vehicles, such as the Tron Bike from "Tron: Legacy" and the Batmobile from "The Dark Knight," the rover is sleek and rugged, designed to tackle the harsh terrain of the martian environment.

At 28 feet long, 14 feet wide, and 11 feet tall, the Mars Rover features six off road air-less wheels with SeaDek nonskid on the spokes, as well as a laboratory in the rear of the vehicle to conduct research and experiments. SeaDek was utilized throughout the interior of the rover, providing traction in what would likely be hazardous conditions, as well as padding to protect astronauts inside the vehicle during turbulent passages.

While the concept vehicle won't be making a trip to the red planet, it will be touring the East Coast as part of NASA's "Summer of Mars" campaign. After its recent unveiling at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor's Complex, the rover currently resides on display before the tour.

Local dentist recognized

The Florida Dental Association has announced that Ms. Diana (Chris) Philips of Brevard County, was honored with the Public Service Award at the 2017 Florida Dental Convention in Orlando.

In 2005, Ms. Philips took over as the adult volunteer clinic director at the Brevard County Health Department, which has three different facilities in Titusville, Viera and Melbourne. In 11 years, she has visited nearly every office in the county, volunteered in numerous capacities and recruited volunteers to treat patients in the volunteer clinic.

In her role representing the BCHD and the volunteer clinic, Ms. Philips has established emergency department referral programs with two of the area’s largest hospitals. These programs have shown a significant reduction in dental emergency department visits, serving as a model for other counties and garnering recognition by the state and the governor.

Ms. Philips also volunteers extensively in the community. Her efforts include helping transport homebound patients to the volunteer clinic; attending volunteer dental events at the community college; helping the Brevard County Dental Society raise money for Give Kids A Smile events; and finding care in the dental community for patients who might not qualify for the clinic or Medicaid, or who might need services not available in those programs.

She also works with the National Veterans Homeless Support, which provides dental screenings and supplies to homeless veterans in Brevard County; and volunteers at the annual BCDS “Tooth Trot,” where she dresses as the Tooth Fairy and hands out gifts for children.

RUAG Space USA celebrates official opening of Titusville manufacturing site

As part of RUAG’s continued expansion into the United States, Europe’s leading supplier for satellites and launchers opens doors to the new 23,800-square-foot facility in Titusville. As an initial mandate, this factory will produce the composite structures for 900 OneWeb satellites.
