Space Coast Association of Realtors visit Washington and Capitol Hill
On behalf of current and future home and property owners throughout the country, more than 9,600 Realtors traveled to Washington, D.C., in late May to advance key real estate issues during the 2017 Realtor Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo.
Lynn Jones, 2017 president of the Space Coast Association of Realtors, joined fellow realtors from Florida and across the nation to attend meetings and informational sessions, as well as meet with regulatory agency staff and lawmakers on Capitol Hill to discuss and advocate real estate issues affecting their businesses, communities and clients.
While in Washington, Space Coast Association of Realtors members met with U.S. Congressman Bill Posey, (R-Rockledge), on Capitol Hill to discuss and influence public policy decisions that directly affect consumers' ability to own, buy, rent and sell residential and commercial real estate.

Steward Health Care launches 'I Am A Steward' ad campaign
Steward Health Care has launched a radio, print and television advertising campaign in the Spacecoast titled “I Am A Steward,” featuring Dr. Daniel Lai of Wuesthoff Medical Center-Melbourne and and Dr. Drexel Dobson of Wuesthoff Medical Center-Rockledge. Council members appointed to serve on Florida League of Cities
The Florida League of Cities has appointed Cocoa District 2 Councilperson Brenda Warner and City Manager John A. Titkanich, Jr., AICP, ICMA-CM, to serve on the 2017-18 Land Use & Economic Development Legislative Policy Committee and District 4 Councilperson Jeri Blanco to serve on the 2017-18 Energy, Environment & Natural Resources Legislative Policy Committee.
Councilperson Warner has been committed to building a solid foundation for Cocoa’s future for almost two decades when she was first elected to the Cocoa City Council in 1999. She has chaired the Titusville Chamber Government Affairs Committee and been a member of the Cocoa Police Advisory Board, Cocoa Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the Downtown Redevelopment Agency. She currently serves on the Brevard County Affordable Housing Council, the County Affordable Housing Task Force, the Cocoa U.S. 1 Corridor Redevelopment Agency and the Cocoa Police Athletic League Board of Directors.
Councilperson Blanco was appointed to City Council in 2016. She has served on the U.S. 1 CRA for the city for approximately 10 years, as well as on the Brevard County CDBG Board since 2014. As a local Realtor she has also served on several committees for the Board of Realtors. She currently serves on the MLS Committee, the Brevard Children in Need Committee and the Government Affairs Committee.
City Manager John A. Titkanich, Jr., AICP, ICMA-CM, has been with the city of Cocoa for more than a decade now. Prior to being appointed city manager in February 2013, he served as the city’s Community Development Director for more than eight years. He previously served as a planner in both Land Development and Economic Development for the city of Orlando. He created the Office of Economic Development for the city of Cocoa in 2002 and is a member of the International City/County Management Association where he is recognized as a Credentialed Manager (ICMA-CM).

Product featured on concept vehicle
Always exploring new applications for its innovative EVA non-skid products, SeaDek is going to be a supplier for NASA's recently unveiled Mars Rover concept vehicle.
Designed and built by Parker Brothers Concepts - best known for its futuristic concept vehicles, such as the Tron Bike from "Tron: Legacy" and the Batmobile from "The Dark Knight," the rover is sleek and rugged, designed to tackle the harsh terrain of the martian environment.
At 28 feet long, 14 feet wide, and 11 feet tall, the Mars Rover features six off road air-less wheels with SeaDek nonskid on the spokes, as well as a laboratory in the rear of the vehicle to conduct research and experiments. SeaDek was utilized throughout the interior of the rover, providing traction in what would likely be hazardous conditions, as well as padding to protect astronauts inside the vehicle during turbulent passages.
While the concept vehicle won't be making a trip to the red planet, it will be touring the East Coast as part of NASA's "Summer of Mars" campaign. After its recent unveiling at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor's Complex, the rover currently resides on display before the tour.

Local dentist recognized
The Florida Dental Association has announced that Ms. Diana (Chris) Philips of Brevard County, was honored with the Public Service Award at the 2017 Florida Dental Convention in Orlando.
In 2005, Ms. Philips took over as the adult volunteer clinic director at the Brevard County Health Department, which has three different facilities in Titusville, Viera and Melbourne. In 11 years, she has visited nearly every office in the county, volunteered in numerous capacities and recruited volunteers to treat patients in the volunteer clinic.
In her role representing the BCHD and the volunteer clinic, Ms. Philips has established emergency department referral programs with two of the area’s largest hospitals. These programs have shown a significant reduction in dental emergency department visits, serving as a model for other counties and garnering recognition by the state and the governor.
Ms. Philips also volunteers extensively in the community. Her efforts include helping transport homebound patients to the volunteer clinic; attending volunteer dental events at the community college; helping the Brevard County Dental Society raise money for Give Kids A Smile events; and finding care in the dental community for patients who might not qualify for the clinic or Medicaid, or who might need services not available in those programs.
She also works with the National Veterans Homeless Support, which provides dental screenings and supplies to homeless veterans in Brevard County; and volunteers at the annual BCDS “Tooth Trot,” where she dresses as the Tooth Fairy and hands out gifts for children.

Cocoa Beach Main Street tracks multi-million dollar investments
Cocoa Beach Main Street, now in its third year, has been recognized as a “2017 Accredited Main Street America Program." Tracking the return on investment in the downtown area of the city of Cocoa Beach has been one of the primary measures of the Cocoa Beach Main Street program’s success and a requirement for accreditation.
Statistics are provided to the state of Florida on a quarterly basis. The return on investing in a Main Street community, according to the National Main Street Center, for every dollar invested in a Main Street community, nearly $40 is returned to the community.

Embraer flies first Legacy 500 assembled in Melbourne
Embraer has announced the maiden flight of its first Legacy 500 midsize business jet assembled at its industrial facilities in Melbourne, just eight months after the first Legacy 450 mid-light jet assembled in Melbourne took flight. The aircraft performed as expected, and all flight test procedures were successfully completed.
“We are very pleased with yet another milestone for the Legacy 500 and we look forward to delivering the aircraft in the third quarter,” said Michael Amalfitano, President & CEO, Embraer Executive Jets. “This flight also marks a key milestone for our Melbourne operations, where we expanded our production facility and doubled our footprint.”
The Legacy 500 is the fourth business jet model to be assembled at the Company’s Melbourne facility, where the Legacy 450 is also produced, alongside the Phenom 100 and Phenom 300. The Legacy 450 and Legacy 500 are also manufactured at Embraer’s production facilities in São José dos Campos, Brazil.
Brevard County's only sanctuary for domestic animals
Katherine Johnson has announced that Jacque Rivas and her associates at Doggy D'Tails in Melbourne raised $1,021 at a fundraiser and presented the check to Ms. Johnson to be used toward the construction of The Animal Sanctuary in Cocoa.
This, and all proceeds raised at events will go toward the purchase of 4,500 truckloads of fill dirt necessary to bring the property in rural Cocoa up to code, prior to construction of the 11 buildings that will be placed on the Judith & Don Moliter Sanctuary Campus.
The campus is situated on 17.6 acres of land and will have no-cage homes for small animals like rabbits and ferrets, as well as cats, dogs and farm animals. Part of the business plan includes not only an educational aspect, but the opportunity for Scouts to earn badges by working with the animals.
Volunteers currently work at the Thrift Shoppe, which generates funds for The Animal Sanctuary, and others work behind the scenes creating events.

Potter, a decorated retired U.S. Air Force colonel, has had a significant impact on the aviation industry. Throughout his career, he was an active member of Airports Council International’s Legal Committee, a lobbyist in Washington, D.C., for Florida’s airports and economic development and led a group of international advisers and worked with organizations like International Civil Aviation Organization and North Atlantic Treaty Organization to reconstruct the civil aviation system in Bosnia and Herzegovina after years of war.
MLB’s Embraer Legacy Expansion Project was selected as Airport Project of the Year based on several factors, including its contribution to bringing jobs to the community, overcoming challenges from Hurricane Matthew, construction planning that allowed continued Phenom jet production to be uninterrupted, and its cost-effectiveness.
VNA Space Coast receives back-to-back 5-star rating in patient satisfaction
VNA Space Coast Home Health recently received its second 5-star rating this year by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid’s ‘Home Health Compare’ in patient satisfaction.
Home Health Compare provides the public information about the quality of care and patient satisfaction provided by “Medicare-certified” home health agencies throughout the nation.
VNA also received a 4.5-star rating for quality of patient care, a category measured by nine criteria ranging from timely initiation of care to improvement of pain interfering with activity. The star-ratings were designed by CMS to empower patients to make educated and informed decisions when it comes to choosing a home health care provider.
VNA’s patient satisfaction survey results revealed the agency is rated above state and national averages for providing care in a professional way, communicating with patients; discussing medications, pain and home safety with patients, overall agency care, and how likely patients are to recommend the agency to friends and family.
