BREVARD COUNTY — Two local residents will face off in the Aug. 18 primaries for State Representative Dist. 53. The winner will face Phil Moore (DEM) and Thomas Unger (WRI) on Nov. 3 in the General Election.

Hometown News is providing candidate profiles, so that our readers can become familiar with those who would like to serve Brevard County residents.

Profiles highlighting the remaining candidates in the Aug. 18 Primary Election will follow in the coming weeks.

Marcelle “Marcie” Adkins, 60, Grant-Valkaria

Party affiliation: Republican

Number of years as resident: 24 years as a Valkaria resident, 34 years total as a Brevard County resident

Occupation and company you work for: Retired Consulting Economist. Previously had own consulting company for 27 years and worked in Tallahassee for Taxation and Budget Reform Commission and Florida Department of Labor.

Education: Ph.D. Economics, MA Economics, BA Economics, BS Chemistry. All earned from the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL

Number of children: Two children, one son—in-law and one grandchild

What makes you the best candidate for this seat?: “My candidacy began when I saw the incumbent lacked integrity, respect for others and the ability to collaborate on CS/HB 7087. As such, and since I have repeatedly observed these deficiencies, my highest goal is to restore integrity, respect and collaboration to HD 53.

“In addition, as a second amendment advocate, I was chagrined at the gun rights that were removed by the incumbent and other liberal legislators. Finally, as the only professional economist to be serving in the Florida Legislature, it will be my responsibility to help ensure that our State regains its pre-COVID economic footing.”

Randy Fine, 46, Unincorporated Brevard

Party affiliation: Republican

Number of years as resident: 14 years

Occupation and company you work for: Retired small businessman

Education: Harvard College, Cambridge, MA, A.B. in Government, magna cum laude. Harvard Business School, Boston, MA, Masters in Business Administration with high distinction

Marital status: Married to Wendy Fine

Number of children: Two children

What makes you the best candidate for this seat?: “For four years, I have fought for you. I have fought the impact of COVID-19 by donating my legislative salary to help pay for a free food distribution that helped feed more than 3,000 families. I’ve brought back millions to clean up the Lagoon and have increased fines to make polluters pay for raw sewage spills.

“I haven’t just talked about fighting corruption – I secured state audits of Palm Bay and Melbourne that uncovered tens of millions of dollars in scandals like the ‘Interchange to Nowhere.’ I would appreciate your vote so I can keep Fighting For Brevard.”
