BREVARD COUNTY — When moving into a community, especially when you’re looking for one in Florida, most people 55 and over think the ideal home is located close to the beach and has a golf course.

Out of all the possible areas to choose from, the Indian River Colony Club in Viera might just be the perfect choice. It was recently voted as one of the top 20 golfing communities in North America by and it’s close to the beach.

The online real estate website for golf properties in the United States listed the IRCC in its top 20 list in favor of the community’s Indian River Colony Club Foundation, a nonprofit entity which serves to support those in need through its charitable giving.

“A desirable golfing destination must feature a well maintained, scenic and challenging golf course,” said Ed Baker, president of the Men’s Golf Association at IRCC. “IRCC excels in those categories. We employ our own staff and enjoy professional golf course maintenance. The scenery at IRCC is beautiful, as the course meanders among the lakes, picturesque homes and pristine landscaping. Bird watching is a bonus.”

Mr. Baker explained that the private, par 72-course features challenging holes with water at each of the 18 holes. It also includes a Pro Shop, aqua driving range, two putting greens and practice bunkers.

“Multiple tee boxes allow members to play rounds of varying lengths from 6,117 yards to 4,692 yards,” he continued. “The varying lengths and water and sand hazards supply a significant challenge regardless of your skill level.”

The neighborhood welcomes residents who are 55 and over, with members largely made up of military veterans. The IRCC is a gated community of nearly 800 homes on 453 acres.

“There are several nice golf courses in Brevard County and throughout Florida, but none can match the friendships and camaraderie enjoyed by the membership and golfers here at IRCC,” Mr. Baker said. “This is truly ‘The Place Patriots Call Home.’”

Judi Bickmore, past president of the Women’s Golf Association at IRCC said, “I think IRCC’s community is a desirable destination because we are centrally located, not far from Orlando, yet not so near that we are in the hub of that area. We are near beaches and we are in a growing area here in Viera, yet behind our walls the community is quiet. Golfing is year round.”

While golfing is certainly a popular sport amongst community members, not everyone enjoys being on the green. The IRCC also offers its members three Har-Tru tennis courts, a heated 3,000-square-foot swimming pool with lap lanes, a fitness center, country club and Colony Hall.
