BREVARD COUNTY — The Florida Department of Transportation has announced plans to make improvements to the State Road 519 (Fiske Boulevard) and Interstate 95 interchange from south of Prosperity Place to north of Barnes Boulevard.
While construction is expected to begin in spring 2021, the design phase of the project will not be completed until the end of this year.
Operational and safety improvements will include adding dual left turn lanes at the on and off ramps, free-flowing right turn movements onto I-95 will be adjusted under signalized control, and the road will be resurfaced with pedestrian and bicycle facilities added to the road and bridge.
Additionally, the northbound U-turn movement at the intersection of S.R. 519 and the southbound I-95 exit/entrance will be removed.
“The Florida Department of Transportation identified the need to resurface and widen the travel lanes and improving pedestrian and bicycle safety facilities,” said Steve Olson, communications manager for FDOT, district 5.
He further explained, “This project will add operational efficiency to the intersections and increase the safety for all users through the addition of bike lanes, sidewalk connections, and improved pedestrian crossings.”
Recommendations for these improvements along I-95 and Fiske Boulevard were based on the I-95 Systems Operational and Analysis Report, according to Mr. Olson.
FDOT held a public hearing in late January at the city of Rockledge Council Chambers, giving residents an opportunity to review the project information and discuss the changes proposed with staff.
“The feedback that we have received so far has been in support of the project,” Mr. Olson said. “There have been some requests to reevaluate the removal of the northbound U-Turn lane just north of Prosperity Place in anticipation of a future development at what is currently the Tucker Ranch.”
