Rumor has it
Can you please clear up the following rumors? Are we ever going to get another Publix in the Tradition area? First, the rumor was Becker and Village, and then it was Riverland Center near the Walk at Riverland. Are the rumors true, or are they just rumors?
Unacceptable
The people who chose to own a dog do not own the right to impost that responsibility on others. What it this? "Take the dog for a walk" is just to deposit feces and urine all over town. Whether owners pick it up or not does not address this filthy and disgusting happening. It's your dog — your choice. Keep the filth in your own yard!!!!
Re: Sudoku too hard
Please, please, please, do not change your Sudoku puzzles one bit. Yes, some really tax you to get it completed, set aside, start again, set aside again, but eventually they can be solved. Some are very easy and some so-so, so I think you have a very nice mix. I do every single one until completed. Also, your Sudoku puzzles are the only ones available to me, now that our daily paper has changed their rating system, making even the ones that should be the hardest just much too easy. It took a little while for me to come up with a system that works for me and helps me complete the puzzles. Maybe the person who wrote you last week just hasn't found the perfect system for them yet. Please, keep up doing everything you do — it's perfect. I really look forward to the paper every week. You even get plus, plus for when we had the two storms, and you never missed an issue. Thank you, thank you!
Re: I know what I'm saying
The writer stated Biden "declaring war" on the oil industry (hindering the poor oil companies) caused our inflation and mentioned “the mainstream media cover up” of Biden blunders. Let's look at the facts: 1. The U.S. is the largest oil producer. 2. Oil companies don’t even pump oil out of all the existing wells, while pushing their claim that they need more drilling. 3. Despite high and consistent profits, oil companies receive billions in government subsidies, paid for by you and me. 4. The cost of blood and money in military wars/actions for oil is more than I can state in 250 words. 5. Oh, by the way, the Donbass area and the sea off Crimea have large untapped reserves of gas/oil. Dems and Republicans alike have had a hand in all this. Don’t get me wrong; we need to support Ukraine, or it is just a matter of time before we're sending our military to fight. The Biden blamer attributes the “mainstream media” for covering the "blunders." No doubt the noble FOX News will always be the beacon of truth, justice and the American way, or maybe we can take a brake form the FOX kool-aid. As Mark Twain said, “It ain’t what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so.” Ponder this, while endlessly investigating Hunter Biden's laptop, should we also look into former President Trump for having one of his employees (with no security clearance) download classified White House documents on Trumps private laptop? Bet you didn’t see that on FOX.
Re: Article on AP Black History courses
I want to thank your journalist, Mike Winikoff, and the HTN for the Feb. 17 article on the debate surrounding the Florida AP courses on Black History. This was an excellent article that more fully explained the situation on both sides. I hope your readers will spend the time to read the entire story. It is a lot longer than most of your articles, but well worth a read. Looking forward to a follow-up article, please.
Truth is truth for all
To the person responding to "The Truth is Truth," trashing the current president, everything stated would be just as true if they had substituted the former president’s name in place of Biden’s. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
Re: Star-Spangled Banner me NOW!!
Someone ranted in the Feb. 14 edition about the National Anthem not being played at this year’s Super Bowl. Well, I guess they must have tuned in late because I clearly remember Chris Stapleton performing our National Anthem at the Super Bowl. Please, mo more false statements. In fact, just google it. Thank you!!
Black History is good, but...
Black History Month is a good thing. We can only be enriched by learning about other nationalities and races. But I have been wondering why the Black communities think they have a corner on pain and suffering in their past? Look at history, you will see that all races and nationalities have been persecuted through pain and suffering, not the least is the Native Americans, who still suffer horribly. We took all their land and banished them into poverty. The Japanese Americans, who were shipped to “holding camps” for years in Washington and Oregon because of prejudice against them. Most of these people were American citizens and the government seized their homes and possessions and put them on buses to the west. We don’t talk about or remember these parts of our history. The Jewish extermination by the Nazis, millions of good men, women and children, tortured, gassed, shot and starved in the concentration camps. And even the Irish were persecuted when they migrated from Ireland to our country. We should have a month for all of these people, and if we were all millionaires, we could pay them for their suffering. Through history, good people have suffered at the hands of bad people. The current American population is not responsible for any of this suffering. Our responsibility is to be good people and make the world a better place for ourselves and others.
Cops, bump up the law
Bumpers were designed to be of uniform height, so that on vehicle to vehicle impact the bumpers would offer some defense. F1 race cars have exposed wheels because there are no pedestrians on the racetrack. Road traffic vehicles have fenders covering the wheels to protect pedestrians, as fenders deflect rather than pull victims in. But drive round Florida, and you have these trucks raised to a height you need a ladder to climb into the cab. Some have wheels spaced out way beyond the car frame. These vehicles are a hazard on public roads. Maybe our local police should read STATE UNIFORM TRAFFIC CONTROL, Chapter 316, Section. 316.251, Maximum bumper heights.

Reality check
Here's a rant about reality. After all the misinformation being printed from the lunatic fringe, here's a dose of reality. Anti-woke is anti-liberty and anti-justice. The dictionary defines being "woke" as being aware of injustice, especially racial injustice, in society. The increasing assault on being woke by some politicians is both alarming and outrageous. These politicians don't want us to speak out against injustice in society; they want to deny freedom and equality to some members of our community, to censor the teaching of accurate American history, which if taught accurately, might cause discomfort for some of us, but nothing like the discomfort suffered by other Americans because of the color of their skin. This assault on liberty and justice, disguised as freedom, can only succeed if the majority of us, who are no longer asleep, remain silent. Thank God most of our youth, the future of America, have now awoken and realized just how patriotic it is to be woke. Don't be fooled — being woke means no longer tolerating injustice, being of aware of hate and intolerance, and taking a stand against it. It's a very patriotic thing to do. Wake up, and put love for your neighbor into practice! No wonder the Fox Fake News Channel is about to be forced by the courts to pay out billions to Dominion voter machines for knowingly lying about stolen elections (while mocking their viewers' ignorance regarding the 2020 election). E-mail evidence exhibits proved Fox News personalities knew they were lying to their viewers about the election being stolen, even bragging about how the lies on the Fox Fake News Channel were good for ratings. Newsmax does the same thing; no wonder they were kicked off many cable carriers. The same should rightly happen to the Fox Fake News Channel. There's a good dose of reality for those spreading MAGA lies on this forum. Also, Donald Trump might run for president, but he is more likely running from justice in half a dozen criminal investigations. Justice will prevail, as long as we stay woke and not fall asleep again.
It's basic math
What would hurt Russia more? A dozen M1 tanks to Ukraine or oil at $50.00 a barrel? The billions in revenue they would lose would hurt them much worse.
Re: Stolen Election
I am a registered Democrat who voted for Trump in 2016 because I knew we needed to shake things up politically, and I got what I asked for and then some. I had no idea he read at a third grade level. Google "Trump can't read" and see for yourself. He never read anything of importance that was put on his desk at the White House! Every single person working in the White House was smarter than he was. I'm sick of hearing how the election was stolen. If elections could be stolen, I'm sure Trump would have stolen it! Trump became president in 2016 because of idiots like me. It wont happen again!

According to the U.S. Department of Education, 54% of American adults read below a sixth-grade level. FIFTY-FOUR PERCENT. This is an alarming and disturbing statistic that should outrage all Americans. But our civic leaders, at both the state and local levels, seem to think 54% is too high a number and are force-feeding legislation and policies down the throats of citizens that limit reading material available to students at public schools. Florida’s “Parental Rights in Education” bill creates a council tasked with coming up with restrictions for public school libraries and indoctrinating school librarians to abide by the law. There is no "debate" about books, as it is characterized by some. This legislation encourages parents to raise objections to books they simply don’t like and petition school districts to ban them. Among the novels on the hit list of some activist organizations are: “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” by American laureate Maya Angelou; “Beloved,” a Pulitzer Prize winner by Toni Morrison, set in the aftermath of the American Civil War; “Slaughterhouse Five,” by Kurt Vonnegut, an award-winning novel about the dichotomy of predestination and free will; and “The Kite Runner,” by Khaled Hosseini, which focuses on life in a tumultuous and war-torn Afghanistan. These works encourage critical thinking about life, the past, the future, and the present. It’s hard to imagine why someone would want to keep any of them out of the hands of a student. Far from mining for restrictions, parents, teachers and elected leaders should encourage people of all ages, especially children of school age, to read as much and as often as possible. We live in a global environment. High school and college graduates compete for jobs and prosperity not just with those from neighboring towns and villages but with people from other countries like India, Japan and China. Sub-sixth-grade reading proficiency just won’t cut it. We have to do better.
